July 9th - El Gusto de La Mama - The Taste of La Mama (11am - 2.30pm)

Take the opportunity to taste something new and sample a range of our authentic and speciality Tapas. Bite size platters will be available comprising of a few of our favourite Tapas for just £3.

July 9th - Children's cooking class - Sopaipillas baking (12pm - 1.30pm)

All children and parents welcome to learn how to cook traditional Chilean pastries - Sopaipillas! Children will be taught how to create the pastry and allowed to shape before being cooked - free for all the family!

Starting April 2nd we will be hosting classes in the latest dance craze - KIZOMBA!

A traditional and sensual Angolan dance, with elements of Tango and Salsa, it is sure to get you moving. Kizomba classes will run every Saturday afternoon from 3.30pm until 6.30pm.

Chilean miner visits La Mama...

We were very pleased to welcome José Henriquez, rescued Chilean miner, to La Mama in January of this year. José was in the city to make a speech appearance, before which he was a special guest at the restaurant and enjoyed a tapas dinner and fine Latin wine.

Rescued Chilean miners to visit La Mama!

We are delighted to share with you the fantastic news that a small number of the rescued Chilean miners from Copiapo, Chile, will be dining at La Mama before their January speech appearance in Sheffield.

José Henriquez will be telling his amazing story at Victoria Hall, Norfolk St on Jan 28th at 8pm. José was the miners’ spiritual leader. Admission is by ticket (free), available from chileanminersvisit@hotmail.co.uk, Victoria Hall Reception, or call 0114 285 4354.

"...The host was really friendly, but not annoyingly intrusive - he made us welcome and made us laugh. I think there's still a niche for that kind of atmosphere and service on the London Road/Abbesydale Road stretch (though some others on that stretch are also friendly).

The food was really good - the closest thing in Sheffield to dining in a small restaurant in Spain (I've never been to South America, which I know is the influence in here) - really nice quality Patatas Bravas as a (free) pre-starter. We also had excellent scallops cooked in a great sauce, a lovely chorizo in cider and mains of a fish stew and the estofado. The standard was really good. I also had their take on a crème brûlée, with some flaming booze on top. It was lovely too. The wine list was very reasonably-priced and heavy on the South American wines.

Very pleasantly surprised. If you are looking for Spanish/Latin American food, I'd say give it a go. I think we'll be back. I still think they should have chosen a different name, but there you go!"

Mama Mia, on Abbeydale Road, is a Latin American restaurant with a European twist and is well worth a visit. The restaurant is owned by Daniela Valeria-Cerpa, with her two aunts, entrepreneurs Jeannette and Paola. The Valeria family came over from Chile in 1976 and it wasn’t long before they had opened a first restaurant, to fantastic critical acclaim. With a passion for good food running through their veins, there is no doubt this Latin trio have the winning combination; charisma, energy and generations of experience. “The name, Mama Mia, is actually a tribute to my late mother, Norma Valeria, who was a supremely talented chef, and a true matriarch,” said Jeannette. “She always brought the whole family together, and so does this restaurant – it is in homage to her. “It is precisely this sense of tradition and heritage that inspired us to set up this restaurant.”

Indeed, even Jeannette’s daughter Carla is following the family tradition and spends her weekends waitressing at the restaurant. Mama Mia is open in the morning from 9am for some delicious breakfast options including homemade bread, croissants and a superb selection of top quality coffee and hot drinks. Lunch is served until 3pm and comprises some mouth-watering light bite options including pasta, pizza, frittatas, soups and tortillas (Spanish omelettes). In the evening, from 6.30pm, the restaurant comes to life as an atmospheric destination for a superb quality evening meal with friends or family. Children are welcome in the restaurant until 9pm, and even have their own dedicated menu with home-cooked meals such as pizza and chicken Milanese. For the adults, the extensive menu offers a huge choice; with meat specialities such as Asado Argentino, which is beef with chorizo, Estafado Chileno, which is beef stew with aromatic herbs and red wine, as well as fish dishes such as Zarzuela de Pescado, which is a Chilean fish stew.

Vegetarians are also well catered for with the daily delivery of fresh vegetables to the kitchen giving inspiration to the special dishes on the blackboard. “We employ a team of Moroccan chefs, each of whom has spent more than 15 years living and working in Spain, so there is a unique influence to their cooking,” said Jeannette. And it’s not just the mains that will get you filled with Latin passion; the dessert menu is heaven for those with a sweet tooth. Creme caramel, panacotta, Catalonian cream and a weekly changing specials, are just a small taste of what’s on offer. The restaurant is fully licensed which means you can enjoy your favourite tipple with a meal, or drop in just for a drink with friends if you don’t want to eat.
